Florals
Ingredient Description
Rose Said to have been Cleopatra's signature scent — she reportedly carpeted her floors in rose petals to seduce Mark Antony. Two varieties dominate: Rosa damascena (sultry, jammy, Bulgarian and Turkish) and Rosa centifolia (lighter, dewier, from Grasse). It takes roughly 10,000 pounds of petals to produce a single pound of rose absolute. Modern accords push rose far beyond powdery and pretty: smoky, leathery, peppery, even savage. Pairs beautifully with oud, patchouli, and saffron.
Jasmine Often called the king of flowers (rose being the queen), jasmine is harvested by hand before dawn. The two stars are Jasminum grandiflorum (lush and indolic) and Jasminum sambac (greener and tea-like). Jasmine carries a natural compound called indole, which at high concentrations smells almost animalic. That tension between innocent white flower and something darker underneath is why jasmine has been the secret weapon in nearly every classic perfume from Joy to Chanel No. 5.
Tuberose So heady that 17th-century Italian convents forbade young women from walking through tuberose gardens for fear they'd be overcome. Creamy, narcotic, almost coconut-like, with a green snap underneath. Despite the name, it has no botanical relationship to roses — it's a relative of the agave. Synthetic versions are often layered in to amplify its buttery, milky quality.
Lily of the Valley A delicate white bell of a flower that refuses to give up its scent through traditional extraction. Every lily of the valley note in modern perfumery is therefore a reconstruction, built around hydroxycitronellal. The result is watery, green, and dewy, with a clean floral lift. The French call it muguet, and tradition holds that giving a sprig on May 1st brings good luck.
Orange Blossom Distilled from the same Seville orange tree that gives us neroli and bigarade, orange blossom absolute is sweeter, headier, and more honeyed. Where neroli is bright and green, orange blossom is sun-warmed and almost edible. A traditional component of bridal bouquets in the Mediterranean and a cornerstone of countless Middle Eastern and North African perfumes.
Neroli Named after a 17th-century Italian princess who scented her gloves and bathwater with it. Steam-distilled from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree. The scent is sharp, green, slightly metallic — sunnier and more citrus-leaning than orange blossom. A backbone of classic eau de cologne and a favorite of perfumers looking to add lift without sweetness.
Ylang-Ylang A tropical yellow flower native to the Philippines and Indonesia, whose name translates roughly to "flower of flowers." Intensely sweet, banana-like, custardy, with hints of rubber and jasmine. Distilled in fractions — the first pass (called extra) is the most prized. The floral that makes a perfume feel tropical without being literal.
Iris (Orris) Extracted from the dried roots — not the flowers — of the iris plant. It takes a minimum of five years from planting to bottle. One of the most expensive ingredients in perfumery, sometimes more costly than gold by weight. Cool, powdery, carrot-tinged, with the suede texture of an expensive lipstick. The signature note in Prada Infusion d'Iris and Chanel No. 19.
Violet Violet's strangest trick is olfactory: the compounds responsible for its scent (ionones) bind temporarily to your scent receptors and turn them off, so the smell appears and disappears in waves. Powdery, sweet, slightly metallic, with a candied edge. Heavily used in Victorian perfumery and currently enjoying a quiet revival in niche fragrances.
Magnolia Smells the way the American South looks in June: lush, slow, slightly humid. Lemony at first, then creamy and waxy, with a green stem underneath. Different species deliver wildly different profiles — some are champagne-bright, others almost banana-like. Often paired with tea notes and white musk.
Heliotrope A small purple flower that smells nothing like a flower. The aroma is gourmand — almond paste, marzipan, vanilla, a touch of cherry pie. Used in perfumery since ancient Egypt, where it was reportedly burned as incense. Modern fragrances rely on the synthetic heliotropin to recreate the scent.
Cassie (Mimosa) The fluffy yellow puff of a sweet acacia blossom. Cassie absolute is warm, honeyed, slightly spicy, with a powdery softness that has made it a favorite of French perfumers since the 16th century. Mimosa season in the south of France is a small spectacle — entire hillsides turn gold in February.
Geranium Often described as rose's herbal cousin. Bright, green, and slightly minty, with a rosy heart and a citrus lift. Used as both a featured note and as a connector that bridges floral and herbal accords without the powderiness of rose. The backbone of countless men's fougères.
Lotus A serene, watery, slightly tea-like floral with green and waxy undertones. Lotus has spiritual significance across South and East Asian cultures and brings a meditative quality to fragrances that lean Asian or aquatic.
Woods
Ingredient Description
Sandalwood One of the oldest perfumery ingredients on record, appearing in Egyptian, Indian, and Chinese texts going back thousands of years. The most prized variety, Mysore sandalwood, comes from a tree that takes 30 years to mature and has been so over-harvested that wild Indian sandalwood is now protected. Sustainable alternatives now come from Australian sandalwood or from synthetic molecules like Javanol. Sandalwood is what gives a fragrance its skin-on-skin warmth.
Cedarwood The dry, sharpened-pencil smell that anchors countless modern fragrances. Different cedars deliver different stories: Atlas cedar is balsamic and warm, Virginia cedar is dry and almost smoky, Texas cedar is sharper still. One of the most affordable yet effective base notes in a perfumer's toolkit — often used to lend structure to florals or backbone to musks.
Oud (Agarwood) Sometimes called liquid gold, oud is the dark, resinous heartwood formed when an Aquilaria tree is infected by a specific mold — a defensive response that takes decades to develop. Wild oud has been valued at more than $30,000 per kilo. The scent is divisive: animalic, barnyard, smoky, sweet, leathery, sometimes medicinal. Central to Middle Eastern perfumery for centuries and exploded into Western luxury fragrance in the 2000s.
Vetiver A tall grass whose roots are distilled into one of the most versatile materials in perfumery. Smells the way damp earth smells after rain: rooty, smoky, slightly sweet, with a green-pepper edge. Haitian vetiver is bright and grapefruit-like; Javanese vetiver is darker and more leather-leaning. A staple of men's fragrances since the mid-20th century, though increasingly used in unisex compositions.
Patchouli Once dismissed as the smell of head shops and unwashed hippies, patchouli has been quietly rehabilitated into one of contemporary perfumery's most important raw materials. A member of the mint family — dark, earthy, slightly chocolaty depth that anchors everything from chypres to gourmands to modern oud blends. Aged patchouli loses its rough edges and becomes velvety and almost wine-like.
Cypress The smell of a Mediterranean cemetery, in the best possible way: dry, resinous, green, slightly smoky. Cypress oil brings a clean, almost ascetic woodiness to fragrances and pairs beautifully with citrus, herbs, and incense.
Pine Resinous, sharp, slightly turpentine-like, instantly evocative of cold forests. Rarely a featured note in fine fragrance but heavily used in small doses to give wood compositions altitude and bite.
Rosewood Sweet, slightly floral, slightly spicy — closer to a rose-tinged cedar than a true wood. Brazilian rosewood is now protected, so modern perfumery relies on cultivated alternatives and synthetic recreations.
Resins & Balsams
Ingredient Description
Olibanum Harvested by cutting into the bark of Boswellia trees and collecting the resin that bleeds out, frankincense has been burned in religious ceremonies from ancient Egypt to the Vatican. Cool, lemony, peppery, smoky, slightly pine-like — meditative is the word most perfumers reach for. The natural complement to almost anything woody, ambery, or oriental.
Myrrh Harvested the same way as Olibanum but from a different tree. Bittersweet, balsamic, slightly medicinal, almost mushroomy. Used in embalming, perfume, and medicine for at least 5,000 years. Perfumers reach for myrrh when they want a resin with shadow and weight.
Benzoin A rich, syrupy balsamic resin tapped from styrax trees in Southeast Asia. The scent is unmistakable: vanilla, caramel, cinnamon, a touch of cherry cough syrup. One of the great fixatives in perfumery — it slows down the evaporation of other materials and lengthens the life of a fragrance on skin.
Labdanum The aromatic resin secreted by the leaves of the rockrose bush. Traditionally collected from the beards of goats that grazed through Mediterranean hillsides. Warm, leathery, ambery, slightly animalic — the backbone of nearly every classic amber accord.
Amber Not fossilized tree resin or the gemstone. In perfumery, amber is an accord — a blend of materials, usually labdanum, benzoin, vanilla, and sometimes resin or spice, designed to evoke warmth and golden glow. There is no single amber molecule. Every perfumer builds their own.
Galbanum A green, sharp, almost bitter resin extracted from a Persian plant in the celery family. Smells like a crushed stem on a cold morning — wet, vegetal, slightly metallic. The signature opening note in Chanel No. 19 and many other classic greens.
Sweet Myrrh A Somali resin that smells warmer, sweeter, and more honeyed than its bitter cousin. Slightly balsamic, slightly lavender-adjacent, slightly anise. A favorite of classic French perfumery and a key player in the original Shalimar.
Styrax A dark, smoky, leathery resin tapped from Liquidambar trees. Used in perfumery and incense for thousands of years and brings a slightly tarry, slightly cinnamon-edged warmth to amber and leather compositions.
Spices
Ingredient Description
Cardamom The spice trader's perfume note. Bright, slightly camphorous, slightly minty, with a green warmth that makes it one of the most useful spice notes for opening a fragrance without overheating it. Heavily used in modern men's and unisex compositions.
Pink Pepper Not actually pepper at all — pink peppercorns come from a South American shrub. Sparkling, slightly rosy, slightly piney, with the bite of black pepper softened by sweetness. The note that defined an entire generation of contemporary fragrances starting in the mid-2000s.
Black Pepper The kitchen staple, distilled. Dry, sharp, warm, slightly woody. Often used in small doses to add lift and dimension to woody bases or to give florals a contemporary edge.
Clove From the French clou, meaning nail — a reference to the shape of the dried bud. Warm, sweet, slightly medicinal, and very spicy. Defines the scent of carnations in perfumery (since clove and carnation share a key molecule, eugenol) and is the secret behind almost every "spicy oriental" of the 20th century.
Cinnamon Warmth, comfort, holidays, kitchens. One of the oldest traded spices on record — fought over in the spice wars, hidden in royal vaults, mentioned in Egyptian embalming manuals. In perfumery it adds heat and roundness, often paired with vanilla, amber, and resins.
Saffron The most expensive spice in the world by weight is also one of the most distinctive perfumery materials. Smells leathery, slightly metallic, slightly hay-like, with a strange honey-iodine sweetness. Central to modern oud and amber fragrances, and the trademark note of Tom Ford Tuscan Leather and Byredo Black Saffron.
Nutmeg Warm, woody, slightly sweet, with the comfort-spice quality of pumpkin pie. Historically valuable enough that the Dutch traded Manhattan to the English in exchange for control of a single nutmeg-producing island. Adds gourmand warmth without veering into sweetness.
Ginger Bright, fresh, peppery, slightly soapy. Fresh ginger smells nothing like dried — perfumers use both, often together, to layer a clean lift over a warm spice base.
Coriander Bright, citrusy, slightly woody, slightly peppery. Coriander seed (not cilantro leaf) has been used in perfumery since ancient Egypt and brings a refined, almost gin-like crispness to compositions.
Citrus & Hesperidics
Ingredient Description
Bergamot The most important citrus in perfumery. A small, bitter, fragrant cousin of the orange grown almost exclusively in Calabria, Italy. Sparkling, slightly floral, slightly bitter, with a complexity that flat orange or lemon simply can't match. The defining note of Earl Grey tea and the opening of nearly every chypre and eau de cologne ever made.
Lemon Bright, clean, sharp, instantly recognizable. Italian Sicilian lemon is the gold standard. The challenge with lemon in perfumery is that it evaporates fast — perfumers use synthetic boosters and pair it with longer-lasting citruses to extend its life on skin.
Mandarin Sweeter, softer, and more candied than orange — closer to the smell of a clementine peel at Christmas. Often used to soften the sharper edges of bergamot and lemon, or to add a sunny, almost playful brightness to florals.
Grapefruit The most modern of the citruses, popularized in perfumery in the 1990s. Sharp, slightly sulfurous, slightly bitter — fresher and more contemporary than orange. The note that defined fragrances like CK One and Pleasures.
Bigarade The French word for bitter orange, and the source of three different perfumery materials: neroli (from the blossoms), petitgrain (from the leaves and twigs), and bigarade itself (from the rind). Sharper, more bitter, and more interesting than sweet orange — somewhere between orange peel and grapefruit pith.
Yuzu A Japanese citrus that's slowly become a darling of modern perfumery. Smells like a cross between grapefruit, mandarin, and lime, with a green herbal edge. Sharp, clean, distinctly contemporary.
Petitgrain Distilled from the twigs and leaves of the bitter orange tree — the green, woody, slightly bitter counterpoint to neroli's bright blossom. Often used in colognes and modern men's fragrances for its sophisticated freshness.
Orange The most familiar citrus on the shelf, and the most underrated in perfumery. Sunny, juicy, slightly candied — the smell of peel against fingernail. Less complex than bergamot and shorter-lived than mandarin, but unbeatable when you want a fragrance to read as cheerful, generous, and immediate.
Musks & Animalics
Ingredient Description
Musk The original musk came from a gland in the male musk deer — and the trade nearly drove the species to extinction. Today, every commercial musk in fine fragrance is synthetic, and the family has exploded into dozens of variations: clean musks, powdery musks, sweet musks, animalic musks, laundry musks. Musks are what make a fragrance feel like skin.
White Musk A category, not a single molecule. Clean, soft, slightly sweet, slightly powdery — the smell of clean laundry on a warm day. Heavily used in modern body care and perfumery because they extend the life of a fragrance without adding heaviness.
Ambergris For most of perfumery's history, the most prized raw material in existence: a waxy substance that forms in the digestive tract of sperm whales and washes ashore after years at sea. The scent is impossible to describe — marine, mineral, musky, sweet, slightly animal, weirdly clean. Every fragrance house now uses sustainable synthetic alternatives.
Ambroxan The synthetic substitute for ambergris, and one of the most influential perfumery molecules of the last 50 years. Warm, woody, slightly sweet, slightly skin-like — and at high concentrations, it's the dominant note in fragrances like Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume and Dior Sauvage. The smell most people now think of as "clean modern perfume."
Castoreum Originally extracted from glands near the tail of the beaver. Today's castoreum is almost entirely synthetic and recreates the warm, leathery, slightly smoky, faintly animal quality without the beavers. A defining note of vintage chypres and modern leather fragrances.
Civet Once harvested from the perineal glands of the African civet cat, in conditions the modern industry has rightly walked away from. Synthetic civet recreates the heavy, fecal-floral, warm-bodied animal quality that made the original so prized — and that gave classic perfumes like Shalimar and Bal à Versailles their unmistakable depth.
Ambrette The plant-based musk. Ambrette seeds, from a tropical hibiscus, produce an oil that smells musky, slightly fruity, slightly cognac-like, with a fatty richness that's distinctly different from synthetic musk. One of the few natural musks left in the perfumer's palette.
Gourmands
Ingredient Description
Vanilla The most beloved scent on earth, and one of the most labor-intensive to produce naturally. Vanilla orchids must be hand-pollinated within a narrow window, and the cured pods take months to develop. In perfumery, vanilla is rarely used alone — it's a master blender, softening woods, sweetening resins, warming florals. The signature note in Shalimar and countless cult favorites.
Tonka Bean The seed of a South American tree that smells almost identical to vanilla but with hay, almond, and tobacco underneath. Tonka contains coumarin — the molecule responsible for the smell of fresh-cut hay and the foundation of every fougère fragrance since 1882. Banned as a food additive in the US but essential to perfumery worldwide.
Cocoa Modern perfumery has fallen for cocoa absolute in a big way. Dark, dry, slightly bitter — closer to unsweetened baking chocolate than to a candy bar. Pairs beautifully with patchouli, oud, and tobacco, and softens the edges of leather accords.
Coffee Roasted, bitter, slightly burnt, with a creamy aromatic depth that translates surprisingly well to skin. Coffee has exploded in fine fragrance over the last decade, often paired with vanilla, tobacco, or amber for warmth.
Honey Sweet, waxy, slightly animalic — at high concentrations, honey notes have a urinous quality that perfumers either tame with white florals or lean into for shock value. One of the few gourmand notes that has been used in perfumery for centuries rather than decades.
Almond Marzipan, cherry pits, amaretto, frangipane. Almond in perfumery is almost always a synthetic recreation (benzaldehyde) and bridges the gap between floral, gourmand, and woody compositions.
Caramel A relatively recent arrival in fine fragrance. Caramel notes are usually built from synthetic molecules like ethyl maltol — the same molecule that gives Angel by Thierry Mugler its iconic cotton-candy depth. Caramel made the gourmand era possible.
Fig The smell of a fig tree is more compelling than the smell of a fig fruit: green leaves, white sap, woody bark, soft sweet fruit underneath. The fig accord was effectively invented by Olivia Giacobetti for L'Artisan Parfumeur's Premier Figuier in 1994.
Coconut Tropical, creamy, slightly nutty. Natural coconut is hard to work with; the synthetic version (lactone-based) is what gives modern fragrances their suntan-oil warmth.
Peach Soft, fuzzy, slightly creamy, slightly tart. The peach note in perfumery is built almost entirely from synthetic lactones — the molecules that give stone fruits their characteristic skin-on-skin warmth.
Pear Crisp, dewy, slightly green, slightly champagne-like. Built almost entirely from synthetics and brings a clean, sparkling sweetness that sits somewhere between apple and white floral. A favorite top note in contemporary feminine and unisex fragrances.
Milk Accord A constructed accord that captures the soft, slightly sweet, slightly fatty warmth of warm milk on skin. Typically built from synthetic lactones, vanillic molecules, and white musks. Comforting, intimate, almost edible — a cornerstone of modern gourmand and skin-scent fragrances.
Marshmallow Pillowy, sugary, vaguely vanilla, faintly toasted. Built from ethyl maltol, vanilla derivatives, and soft musks — brings a cloud-like sweetness to gourmand fragrances. Pairs naturally with whiskey, rum, and other boozy notes for a campfire-confection effect.
Boozy & Spirit Notes
Ingredient Description
Rum Warm, sweet, slightly molasses-edged, with the soft burn of brown sugar caught in the back of the throat. One of the most beloved boozy notes in modern perfumery — brings instant character to gourmand and oriental compositions, and pairs beautifully with vanilla, tobacco, coconut, and warm spices.
Whiskey Smoky, warm, slightly leathery, with hints of caramel and oak. Whiskey accords lean drier and more masculine than rum, and they thrive in fragrances built around tobacco, leather, and dark woods. The boozy note for fragrances that want to feel like a low-lit bar in winter.
Bourbon The sweetest, most vanilla-forward member of the whiskey family. Bourbon notes lean into the corn-sugar warmth and toasted oak of American barrel-aging — softer than Scotch, richer than rye, with the unmistakable smell of caramelized sugar on charred wood. Pairs beautifully with vanilla, tonka, leather, and tobacco.
Oak The wood that gives every aged spirit its character. Dry, slightly smoky, slightly toasted, with a tannic woodiness that bridges spirit notes and traditional wood bases. Not to be confused with oakmoss, which is a lichen and behaves entirely differently in a fragrance.
Greens & Herbals
Ingredient Description
Lavender The cornerstone of every fougère fragrance and a defining note in masculine perfumery since the late 19th century. French lavender is herbal and bright, English lavender is sweeter and more floral, lavandin is camphorous and cleaning-product-like. The smell of clean linen, the south of France, and your grandmother's drawer.
Oakmoss A lichen that grows on oak trees in damp European forests. The soul of every classic chypre — dry, earthy, slightly leathery, almost mushroomy. EU regulations have restricted its use over allergen concerns, which is part of why so many vintage perfumes can't be made the way they once were.
Angelica A tall, flowering plant in the celery family, used in perfumery, gin, and Chartreuse liqueur. The root oil smells musky, earthy, slightly animal, with a green herbal lift — one of the few natural materials that can stand in for ambergris-like effects.
Basil Fresh, green, slightly anise-like, slightly peppery. Used in small doses to give a fragrance a culinary, Mediterranean lift.
Rosemary Sharp, camphorous, slightly medicinal — the smell of a sun-warmed herb garden. A traditional note in colognes since the Renaissance.
Mint Cooling, bright, slightly sweet. Peppermint and spearmint deliver very different stories; both are difficult to use without veering into toothpaste, which is why mint in fine fragrance is usually paired with something dirty or warm to balance it out.
Peppermint The sharper, more bracing cousin of mint. Cool, almost cold on the skin, with a clean menthol bite. Pairs surprisingly well with vetiver, lavender, and citrus — the olfactory equivalent of stepping out of an air-conditioned room into a summer afternoon.
Clary Sage The grown-up sage. Herbal, slightly nutty, slightly tea-like, with a soft floral undertone. A favorite of perfumers building sophisticated masculine fragrances and fougères — adds dimension without veering into either food or cologne territory. Often paired with lavender, vetiver, and citrus.
Tea Black tea, green tea, mate, matcha — each is now its own perfumery accord. Tea notes are typically dry, slightly tannic, slightly smoky, often used to add a sophisticated bitterness to florals.
Tobacco Sweet, dry, slightly leathery, slightly honeyed. Tobacco absolute smells more like the inside of a humidor or a pipe shop than a lit cigarette. A staple of warm masculine and unisex fragrances, often paired with vanilla, tonka, and amber.
Immortelle A small yellow Mediterranean flower whose absolute smells unmistakably of maple syrup, curry, and warm hay. Strange, instantly recognizable, and beloved by niche perfumers for its sheer weirdness. The signature note in Sables by Annick Goutal.
Synthetic Molecules
Ingredient Description
Aldehydes The molecules that changed perfumery forever. First used commercially in Chanel No. 5 in 1921 — credited with creating the first truly modern perfume. The smell is abstract: clean, soapy, slightly metallic, slightly waxy, slightly champagne-like. Aldehydes don't smell like anything in nature; they smell like perfume.
Hedione The Greek word for pleasure, and the molecule that quietly underpins almost every modern fragrance. Adds transparency, lift, and a fresh jasmine-citrus quality to whatever it's blended with. First used in Eau Sauvage in 1966 and has been in heavy rotation ever since.
Iso E Super The cult molecule. Woody, velvety, slightly cedary, slightly skin-like — and so beloved by niche perfumers that one fragrance, Molecule 01 by Geza Schoen, is essentially just Iso E Super in alcohol. The molecule that smells different on every wearer.
Cashmeran A modern base note molecule that smells like cashmere wool: soft, warm, slightly spicy, slightly musky, slightly woody. Used to add a cozy, textural depth to florals and amber blends.
Heliotropin The synthetic recreation of heliotrope flower. Powdery, almond-like, slightly cherry, slightly vanilla. The defining note in countless gourmand fragrances and a staple of classic French perfumery.
Salicylates A family of synthetic molecules that smell sweet, balsamic, slightly suntan-lotion-like. The secret ingredient that makes white florals like tuberose, gardenia, and jasmine feel heavier and more dimensional in modern compositions.
Leather Accord Not a single molecule but a constructed accord — typically built from birch tar, castoreum, isobutyl quinoline, suederal, and other materials. Leather accords range from soft suede to smoky biker jacket to brand-new luxury handbag, depending on the perfumer's hand.
FAQ
A fragrance unfolds in three stages. Top notes are what you smell first — bright, volatile materials like citrus, herbs, and light florals that evaporate within 15 to 30 minutes. Middle (or heart) notes emerge as the top fades — typically florals, spices, and rounder materials that carry the fragrance for the next few hours. Base notes are the longest-lasting — woods, resins, musks, and ambers that anchor the composition and can linger on skin for 8 hours or more.
Natural ingredients are extracted directly from plants or, historically, animals. Synthetic ingredients are created in a laboratory, either as recreations of natural materials or as entirely new molecules with no natural counterpart. Modern fine fragrance almost always uses a blend of both — synthetics offer consistency, sustainability, and access to scents that nature can't deliver (clean ocean air, the inside of a cedar box, hydrogen). Natural materials offer complexity and depth that's still difficult to fully replicate.
Cost in perfumery is driven by yield and labor. Iris takes five years from planting to extraction. Rose absolute requires thousands of pounds of petals per pound of oil. Real ambergris is found, not farmed. Oud requires decades of growth and rare conditions. Vanilla orchids are hand-pollinated. The more steps between plant and bottle — and the rarer the source — the higher the price per gram.
The major animal-derived materials — musk (from musk deer), civet (from civet cats), castoreum (from beavers), and ambergris (from sperm whales) — are almost entirely sourced synthetically in modern fine fragrance. The synthetic versions are more consistent, more sustainable, and don't require harm to animals. A small number of niche perfumers still use ethically sourced ambergris (collected after it washes ashore), but the rest are effectively obsolete in their original form.
Oud is divisive. To some it smells precious, smoky, and warm; to others it smells animal, medicinal, and barnyard. Authentic oud carries notes of leather, smoke, dried fruit, and sweet wood, often with an almost cheese-like fermented depth. Most "oud" fragrances on the mass market use synthetic oud accords that emphasize the smoother, sweeter side of the material.
Skin chemistry — pH, body temperature, diet, hormones, and the resident microbiome — interacts with fragrance molecules in ways that subtly shift how they unfold. Some materials, like Iso E Super and musks, are especially sensitive to skin chemistry and can smell dramatically different from one wearer to the next.
